The intervention task was chosen based on a cognitive task analysis designed to determine the attentional and multi-modal demands of the game. Improvements on a measure of attention were found for the intervention group compared to controls. Furthermore, for the intervention group only, initial ability scores predicted improvements on both tests of attention and spatial orientation. These results suggest cognitive training may be more effective for those initially lower in ability. 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Contribution of Physical and Mental Trainings to Depression and Insomnia Disorders in Older Adults
Introduction: Aging is associated with biological changes and may lead to various cognitive behavioural disorders such as insomnia and depression. Non-pharmacological interventions with pharmacological therapies would be effective, economical, and safe. The present study compared the effect of muscle strength-range of movement (MSROM) training and digital game on insomnia and depression disorde...
متن کاملProofreading in Young and Older Adults: The Effect of Error Category and Comprehension Difficulty
Proofreading text relies on stored knowledge, language processing, and attentional resources. Age differentially affects these constituent abilities: while older adults maintain word knowledge and most aspects of language comprehension, language production and attention capacity are impaired with age. Research with young adults demonstrates that proofreading is more attentionally-demanding for ...
متن کاملThe interacting effects of cognitive demand and recovery of postural stability in balance-impaired elderly persons.
BACKGROUND Although postural recovery is attentionally demanding in healthy elderly persons, an inability to recover balance due to competition for attentional resources between the postural system and a second task could contribute to falls in older adults with poor balance. This study examined the attentional demands of balance recovery from a mild postural disturbance in balance-impaired eld...
متن کاملPlasticity of Attentional Functions in Older Adults after Non-Action Video Game Training: A Randomized Controlled Trial
UNLABELLED A major goal of recent research in aging has been to examine cognitive plasticity in older adults and its capacity to counteract cognitive decline. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether older adults could benefit from brain training with video games in a cross-modal oddball task designed to assess distraction and alertness. Twenty-seven healthy older adults particip...
متن کاملNeural correlates of cognitive intervention in persons at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease
Cognitive training is an emergent approach that has begun to receive increased attention in recent years as a non-pharmacological, cost-effective intervention for Alzheimer's disease (AD). There has been increasing behavioral evidence regarding training-related improvement in cognitive performance in early stages of AD. Although these studies provide important insight about the efficacy of cogn...
